Write or Die: A tool for distracted writers

Do you ever go to write a marketing email, and inexplicably find yourself checking email instead? You know, in case anything life-changingly important arrives in between now and the time you finish your writing…

Writing into a word processor can be quite distracting. Google, Facebook and the internet at large are only one click away, pinned in view at the bottom of your screen. Your mobile phone is probably nearby, flashing with SMS, Facebook or WhatsApp messages. In my case, I’m most likely to disappear downstairs to continue my secret / not-so-secret affair with the Nespresso machine…

It takes a level of discipline to ignore all the urgent but unimportant things fighting for your attention.

If you find yourself getting distracted, you might like to try a website called ‘Write or Die’ (writeordie.com). It’s pretty simple. You write directly into the website, into a plain text editor. If you don’t write anything for too long, the screen goes red and car horns begin to blare.

When I first came across this my first response was “NO WAY! That sounds like hell…” But in fact, it’s only hellish if you don’t know what you want to say before you begin writing, or if you get distracted.
