You’ve heard of remarketing. You’ve also heard it called ‘retargeting’, which is confusing.
You known what remarketing is because you’ve experienced it done badly. You’ve been stalked around the internet by thousands of companies you never intended to buy from.
Marketers keep going on about how great remarketing can be for your pay per click results. You get the idea – advertising to people who visited your website should be cheaper, right?
But... you’re SCEPTICAL...
Maybe you’ve tested remarketing in the past, and it hasn’t worked for you. In fact, perhaps it was a giant sinkhole for cash. A way to donate every increasing amounts to Google and Facebook.
You’re intimidated by the language and technical complexity of it all. Language like pixels, audiences, scripts and bid modifiers makes you think this just isn’t for you.
You kind of understand remarketing on Google. But you’re deeply sceptical about remarketing on Facebook and other social media channels. You’ve never had much joy promoting your business on social media, so you don’t see why this would be any different.

Remarketing is Database Marketing...
The key thing to understand is that remarketing is database marketing. Nothing more, nothing less. Google, Facebook and other media providers will let you build a database of people who have been on your website, watched your videos, or made enquiries recently. You can then contact those people through paid ads.
You don’t control the database – Google and Facebook do. But in a loose sense it’s your data. These are people visited your website, or interacted in some way with YOU. There is no cost to build the database, even if you don’t plan to run ads right now. By doing this you give yourself the option to run remarketing ads, in a way that limits your risk.
Why Remarketing Doesn’t Work
The most common reasons remarketing goes wrong are:
- Insufficient thought is given to the strategy. Most remarketing ads point out what you last did (which is creepy), rather than what you ought to do next
- Most remarketing ads just repeat the same offer over and over
- Key settings are missed which greatly increases your spend...
Did you know that by default, Google will show your remarketing ads to people who have never visited your website? You HAVE to know where that setting is, and you HAVE to turn it off. At least to begin with.
Did you know that many remarketing clicks come from mobile apps and games, where people tap ads accidentally with their thumb? That’s another thing you probably want to turn off…
Did you know that the most likely person to convert is someone who was on your website in the last 24 hours? Did you know you can prioritise your remarketing around only those people?

This course is excellent! It focuses on all the key things required to setup re-marketing across all platforms. Having Rob and Jonathan's experience is invaluable. They show you how to focus on the key steps needed to set up a solid campaign in a clear concise manner. Also how to avoid pitfalls such as default Google settings that are designed to automatically make you spend more money. Its a nice mix of technical setup and ad creatives. I would highly recommend it if you want to know how to do this properly and save hours of time learning it the hard way!

I’ve avoided learning to create online ads because I so often read that people throw their money away. They create ads that might get a healthy amount of clicks initially, that you pay for, but these very quickly dry up. And those people that did click very often don’t convert. And I understand. I went door-to-door, selling a gas and electric deal on the streets of Birmingham when I was in my twenties. I knew that I was turning up in these people’s lives, asking them to change their heating and electric services over to me, right there and then to a stranger sat in their living room. Cold selling is awful.
I was hesitant to being Rob and Jonathan’s Remarketing Basecamp. I didn’t want to waste my time on something that I’d seen fail for so many people. But there’s a reason why Rob and Jonathan are teaching Remarketing.
I knew nothing about remarketing. But I discovered that it’s a form of warm marketing. Not the door-to-door cold selling of straight-up ads. I’ve never created online ads before, so I had many questions for Rob and Jonathan that I posted in the Google group for the course. The group was useful because I could see the problems that other pupils had and the responses from Rob and Jonathan.
Beware there is a lot to cover in the course!
Some weeks I didn’t manage to complete the training before the live Friday call with Rob and Jonathan. But that didn’t matter as they would run through what we should have done that week. This recap made sure that I didn’t fall behind, which has happened with other online courses I’ve done. On the live recap call, they also answered our questions and dealt with any technical or content creation issues we’d struggled with the previous week. It was good to know that I could rely on them.
Other than setting up the mechanics of the ads and audiences, Rob and Jonathan taught me that it’s crucial to test very different concepts and ideas. With Rob’s Relationship Tool that he shares during the course, it’s easy to create these very different types of ads.
At the end of the course, I had campaigns set up with ads and a remarketing audience populated by people visiting my website. And I’ve improved my copywriting and image selection skills for ads. I set up audiences on all the platforms we covered, but after talking with Rob and Jonathan, they’ve helped me identify the one or two platforms that I should concentrate on for my business.
I also really liked that Rob and Jonathan taught me what default settings in each ad platform should be switched off. Many of these default settings will benefit the platform, costing me unnecessarily more ad expenditure.
I would highly recommend the Remarketing Basecamp course. It’s ideal for people that know little about remarketing ads and want to set up some campaigns and audiences quickly and accurately. Even if you are not going to create the ads yourself, it’s good to know as a business owner how it works and the best practice principles. Armed with this training, you’ll be able to guide better and oversee someone else doing it for you, which will, of course, stop you wasting money with online advertising.
